Former SAS soldier Ben Griffin refused to fight in Iraq because of criminal actions he
witnessed carried out by US forces. Griffin comments on the recent court marshal
guilty verdict imposed on
Flt Lt Malcolm Kendall-Smith, a Royal Air Force doctor who refused to return to Iraq
for a third tour of duty
on the grounds that the war is illegal.

Flight Lieutenant Malcolm Kendall-Smith was sentenced to eight months in prison
for refusing to
serve in Iraq. The judge remarked that "orders have to be obeyed", ignoring the fact
that the Nuremberg trials clearly established that obeying illegal orders is
no defence against war crimes. Kendall-Smith was in the dock while the advocates and
perpetrators of the illegal Iraq war have never been held to account.

General Sir Richard Dannatt, the Chief of the General Staff and
head of the British Army is quoted in the Daily Mail saying the presence of
British troops "exacerbates" Iraq's security problems.
In the interview, Sir Richard said British troops should
"get ourselves out sometime soon
because our presence exacerbates the security problems".
The General also said that planning for what happened after the initial military
offensive was "poor, probably based more on optimism than sound
planning". The General added "Troops had gone into
Iraq with the hope that a pro-western liberal democracy could shift the balance
in the Middle East.Whether that was a sensible or naïve hope history will judge".

'The New York Times' and retired Marine General Bernard Trainor.
The book is based on interviews with a wide range of officials as well as

officers and 600 Iraqi documents.
